What is Universal Design?

Universal Design seems to be a concept that is popping up everywhere these days but many people still don't understand why it is important when building a new home. Universal Design can be defined as the creation of products and environments that are usable by all people regardless of age, gender, culture, or physical ability. So how exactly does that translate into building a new home? Here are a few things to consider:Universal Design first floor bathroom with zero step shower

  • One story living - at least one bedroom and full bathroom along with laundry facilities are located on the first floor
  • Zero step entry - entrance to the home and major rooms are absent of stairs
  • Wider hallwaysUniversal Design kitchen at Clarksburg Village/doorways - movement from room to room is easier
  • Lever door handles/rocker light switches - ease of access when loaded down with packages or for an individual with poor hand strength.
  • Accessible kitchens - multi-level work stations, intuitive work stations, and pull out cabinetry allow people of all ages work efficiently in the kitchen

Universal Design features in the home can benefit all types of families, making a home safer, more comfortable, and more convenient. And the best part about Universal Design is that when it is done correctly, it is virtually invisible to the homeowner. Homeowners can choose to add any number of Universal Design elements through Winchester Homes' "Your Home. Your Way." customization program. View the short video to see how Winchester Homes incorporated these principles into the Universal Design and Green Building showhome that was built in Clarksburg Village as part of Montgomery County's Design for Life program.
