What is an active adult community? It is a place where people over the age of 55 can reside and find people who are like-minded and share similar interests. In choosing an active adult community, it is important to note the important features that each of the prospective community offers. Here are a few tips to consider when finding the right community and the right home to meet your needs:
- Location - it should be near family, friends and relatives; it should be accessible to business centers or workplace if you decided to continue working; it should be close to colleges and universities for continuing education and workshops; how close is it to major transportation routes and emergency services?; review the shopping options and the distance to grocery stores and other day-to-day conveniences
- Universal design - the new home should feature a main level owner's suite at a minimum; other considerations are zero-step entry shower, an open floorplan, energy efficient options, and well designed kitchens
- Community amenities - review the different amenities that an active adult community has to offer; popular amenities include a clubhouse, indoor/outdoor pool, hard and natural surface fitness trails, and exercise room; does the community have a lifestyle director that helps coordinate clubs and activities?
- Overall community -review the entire plan for the community...not just the phase you plan to live in; security is important so gated versus non gated access is something to consider; review the natural surroundings and look for areas of open space where there are trees and water; ask about the maintenance program to determine what the HOA will take care of versus what you as a homeowner will need to do
- Homes - review all of the homes offered at the community; do your homework on the builder - are they reputable and build quality homes?; look at the number of options they offer and if they are willing to customize the home to meet your needs
- Be observant - drive around the community; check out the upkeep of the community; don't be afraid to talk to the people who currently live there to find out if they are happy
