Winchester Homes at Shenandoah welcomes its newest homeowners!

Friday, August 20, 2010 by Allen Rector
Carol and Dave are our newest homeowners at Winchester Homes at Shenandoah.  They came in a few weeks ago and knew it was meant to be when they got two big signs!

The first sign...they ran into a bridesmaid from Carol's wedding over 30 years ago in the model home! According to Carol, they were best friends in college, but lost track of each other for 36 years. They reconnected over the internet a couple of months ago where Carol told her friend about her "find" at Shenandoah! Little did they realize, they would reconnect again at the model home!

And the second sign...when the bridesmaid offered to take their photo in front of their new homesite, the picture number in the camera matched the homesite number - #111! At that point, they new it was meant to be!

Congratulations Carol and Dave! We hope you love your new home!

Shenandoah welcomes the Pawloski's

Winchester Homes at Shenandoah welcomes its newest homeowners, Dick and Diane. They recently sold their home in Pennsylvania to relocate to Northern Virginia to be closer to their family and grandchildren.

They purchased our Meredyth homestyle and made several changes to their kitchen using the Your Home. Your Way. program. They also designed a beautiful deck off the rear of the home to take advantage of their new lake views.

In their spare time, they enjoy computers, golfing, wineries, and outdoor activities...all things that they will be able to easily take advantage of at their new community!

Shenandoah is located midway between Front Royal and Winchester, Virginia and is approximately 90 miles from DC. The community surrounds 120 acre Lake Frederick and offers a indoor/outdoor pools, fitness center, miles of fitness trails, and a full-time Activities Director.

Things to consider when choosing an active adult community

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 by Allen Rector
What is an active adult community? It is a place where people over the age of 55 can reside and find people who are like-minded and share similar interests. In choosing an active adult community, it is important to note the important features that each of the prospective community offers. Here are a few tips to consider when finding the right community and the right home to meet your needs:
  1. Location - it should be near family, friends and relatives; it should be accessible to business centers or workplace if you decided to continue working; it should be close to colleges and universities for continuing education and workshops; how close is it to major transportation routes and emergency services?; review the shopping options and the distance to grocery stores and other day-to-day conveniences
  2. Universal design - the new home should feature a main level owner's suite at a minimum; other considerations are zero-step entry shower, an open floorplan, energy efficient options, and well designed kitchens
  3. Community amenities - review the different amenities that an active adult community has to offer; popular amenities include a clubhouse, indoor/outdoor pool, hard and natural surface fitness trails, and exercise room; does the community have a lifestyle director that helps coordinate clubs and activities?
  4. Overall community -review the entire plan for the community...not just the phase you plan to live in; security is important so gated versus non gated access is something to consider; review the natural surroundings and look for areas of open space where there are trees and water; ask about the maintenance program to determine what the HOA will take care of versus what you as a homeowner will need to do
  5. Homes - review all of the homes offered at the community; do your homework on the builder - are they reputable and build quality homes?; look at the number of options they offer and if they are willing to customize the home to meet your needs
  6. Be observant - drive around the community; check out the upkeep of the community; don't be afraid to talk to the people who currently live there to find out if they are happy

Design for the ages - Universal Design has something for everyone

I hope you find the posted article on Design for the Ages interesting. Design for the Ages or Universal Design is really about ease of use. You may not realize it but you already utilize items that are designed for that on a daily basis. Car seats that slide back and forth, up and down, or recline for different body types, are a universal design component within your automobile.

Winchester Homes has taken the same approach with Universal Design with it's "Artistry Collection" of single level living homes. Originally designed for use in Active Adult communities it has become apparent that the demand for Universal Design extends beyond the Active Adult client. Just today for instance as I was demonstrating one of our model homes to a couple, their twenty something son spoke up and said "Why do I have to wait until I'm 55 for a home like this. I love how everything makes sense and is open. This would be a great house for a party!" The best part of the conversation was that I was able to explain to him that with Winchester Homes' Your Home. Your Way. department we can design these features into house types at our non-age restricted communities as well.
